Interpretation of the Bible / Philippians 4:9

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Before we dive into Philippians 4:9, it’s important to consider the context. In the previous chapters, Paul has been talking about the importance of unity, having the mind of Christ, and persevering in the face of opposition. He encourages the Philippians not to focus on their problems, but to focus on Jesus Christ and His goodness. In this context, Philippians 4:9 gives specific instructions on how we should live our lives.

Paul begins verse 9 by calling us to think about what we have learned, received, heard, and seen in him. This is important because Paul is essentially saying that we can learn from his example and follow him. He is referring to all the teachings he imparted, both in his actions and in his words. In other words, we are all to imitate what he did and said.

While we cannot know Paul personally, we can learn from his teachings as recorded in the Bible. We can study his letters and learn from his life what they reflect. It is important to understand that it is not just what you say, but how you live, and how it is revealed in your faith-filled example in Christ. That is why Paul says in the next verse, “—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).

The promise that follows the command in Philippians 4:9 is that if we do what Paul teaches us, the God of peace will be with us. This does not mean that our lives will be perfect, but that despite our circumstances, there can be peace in our lives. God desires to be with us and give us the supernatural peace that only He can give. We must remember that this peace is not something we gain on our own, but rather a gift from God.
