Interpretation of the Bible / 1 John 4:9

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

The verse from 1 John 4:9 summarizes one of the most important points of Christianity: the love of God, revealed in the coming of His Son into the world. The phrase “This is how God showed his love among us” speaks of the manifestation of divine love for humanity. Not only does God love us, but He chose to send His Son so that we could live through Him.

Why did God send His Son?

The answer to this question is contained in the verse itself: “that we might live through him.” The coming of Jesus represented the way to eternal life and a form of reconciliation between humanity and God.

Since the time of Adam and Eve, humanity had fallen short of divine perfection and needed a way to be reconciled with God. Jesus became the perfect mediator to achieve this reconciliation.

God’s unconditional love

Jesus’s coming into the world also represents God’s unconditional love. We humans can be very selective in who we love and associate with, but God is love, and His love is unconditional. Regardless of our shortcomings or mistakes, God continues to love us and show us His grace. Through the coming of His Son, God showed us that His love knows no bounds.
